What happens if you have completed your engineering and do not study abroad?

“A million engineers in India struggling to get placed in an extremely challenging market” screamed a headline in Economic times last year.

“Degree in hand, a generation of engineers looks for alternatives” reported Live Mint &The Wall Street Journal, one of the largest read e-Newspaper in India

According to different estimates, India churns out about 15 lakh engineers, which is more than the US and China combined. However, two key industries hiring these engineers -- information technology and manufacturing -- are actually hiring fewer people than before.

For example, India's IT industry, utilize high number of these engineers will hire 50,000 fewer people this year (very few of the hire will be entry level), according to Nasscom, manufacturing, too, is facing similar problems.

According to data from AICTE, the regulator for technical education in India, there were 1,511 engineering colleges across India, graduating over 550,000 students back in 2006-07. Fuelled by fast growth, especially in the $110 billion outsourcing market, a raft of new colleges sprung up -- since then, the number of colleges and graduates have more than doubled.

With more number of graduates passing out from engineering colleges, job aspirants in the engineering arena seem to be facing tougher competition compared to their peers from the business administration stream, says a study.

The findings are based on an analysis of data compiled from more than 50,000 job seekers and 3,000 employers across the country, according to Youth4work.com, a portal for student community which conducted the study.

As per study, there are 17 aspirants for every one engineering job available.

The IT industry can’t employ all the engineers that India’s colleges are producing as they themselves learn to cope with a leaner, meaner business climate. At least two generations of engineering students, including those graduating this year and the ones who passed last year, are realizing they don’t have anywhere to go.

With the present job market they will be lucky if they can find a sales job. Even a shoe salesman’s job!!

All is not lost for new engineering graduates. They can get terrific jobs abroad. But how can they get these jobs?

Promotions and Career Advancements

One major reason international students decide to a graduate degree in engineering is to gain a promotion or advancement in their careers. A master's degree in engineering is typically required to be considered an expert or top level engineer in most firms. The education taught in graduate programs allows students access to materials that are not usually taught in undergraduate programs. While undergraduate programs focus on the core principles of engineering, graduate programs teach students advanced level engineering functions while also diving into management philosophies and project management skills. These functions are very important to senior engineers who are expected to supervise and manage projects.

By pursuing a master's degree in engineering international students can gain major traction in their job and advance through management. With a graduate degree in engineering engineers have the opportunity to be team leads, supervisors and managers. This is a huge positive for engineers as it exposes them to the management at major projects and allows them to use the skills they have learned throughout their education. Senior engineers with management experience are a hot commodity in engineering. The potential for high salaries and challenging responsibilities make a graduate degree in engineering a huge benefit. Most companies will also pay a higher salary to employees with master's degree to compensate for their time and commitment to engineering.
